Bernardo Marotti (‘18) was named IIAC Defensive Player of the week on Oct. 22. The IIAC selection credits the record of Luther’s defensive line for their decision. In the past two games against Central College and Coe College, Luther’s defensive line have only let through nine shots on goal.

What is your position and role on the team?

Marotti: I’m a left back. My role on the team is to defend first. As a left back, usually we don’t attack much, but I try as much as I can [to attack], which is one of my strengths.

How do you stay focused during the season?

We have a meeting at the beginning of the season where we decided that we’re not going to go out, we’re not going to drink during the season. We respect that [decision] and stay focused on the practices and games. It is hard, but at the same time, four years goes so fast and you have to enjoy the moments [you have to play soccer]. Personally, I try to listen to music, get good sleep, and sometimes I meditate as well which keeps my mind relaxed.

How do you prepare for a specific soccer game?

On game day I don’t talk to anyone. I don’t like to talk about the game or expectation [about the outcome]. I’m always pretty nervous about games, but I like the feeling.

What are your thoughts on your game against Nebraska Wesleyan on Nov. 1?

We beat them during the regular season 4-0, but it was not an easy game. They are a team that can surprise us, but it just depends on [how we play]. We’re a better team than [Nebraska Wesleyan], so my expectations are that we will win.

What do you enjoy doing besides soccer?

I like listening to music, I think most people do. Also, I’m from Brazil, from Rio [de Janeiro] so I like to surf and play foot-volley, which is like beach volleyball but with your feet. Anything that keeps my mind off things, the problems I have, a hard week I had.

What’s your favorite sports brand?

I would say Nike. I’ve been using [Nike shoes] since my first year [at Luther], I like the the clothes, I like the designs. We switched from Adidas to Nike for our uniforms and I think the design is much better.
