Luther sororities Tau Delta Gamma (TDG), Alpha Beta Psi (ABY) and fraternity Tri-Omega (OOO) took Sept. 15 through 18 to reconnect with members and reach out to the Luther community.
“My favorite part of ABY is meeting new people and creating relationships with people that I would not normally connect with on campus,” Emily Ostermann (‘27), a member of Alpha Beta Psi, said.
Greek Week is an opportunity to reach out to students and give a window into what the sororities and fraternity are all about.
“The main point of Greek Week is to make it known to all students that Greek Life is an option on campus,” Maddux Shockey (‘27), Vice President of Tri-Omega, said. “Within the smaller school setting, people may not realize that Greek life is an option, so our main goal is to get our names and faces out there and get people excited about Greek life!”
Many organizations tabled and threw various events together, including philanthropy tabling and a bingo night held in the Union and Marty’s. Many students participated, whether they were already part of Greek life or looking to join.
Both sororities and the new fraternity participate in local philanthropy work. For the last 20 years, Tau Delta Gamma has supported Winneshiek County Celebration of Life (WCCOL), a non-profit focused on raising money for cancer awareness, prevention and support. Alpha Beta Psi supports the Riverview Center, which offers therapy, counseling and advocacy services to assist victims of sexual abuse. Tri-Omega partners with the Humane Society of North East Iowa which provides a way to teach the fraternity’s members volunteering skills and how to give back to the community. This philanthropy work connects Luther with the Decorah community, helping both the college and Decorah residents.
Bingo night was held in Marty’s, attracting many current and prospective members. Between calling bingo numbers, the sororities and fraternity members made jokes and asked trivia questions. They played music and people shot pool while enjoying each other’s company and learning about what the sororities and fraternity are all about.
Overall, Greek Week 2025 connected with the Luther community and found a number of prospective members. “I would say overall there is an increase in people interested in joining not only my sorority but Greek life in general,” Ostermann said. “It is definitely making a comeback on campus.”
Greek Life will hold other events to foster Luther community connection throughout the year. Tau Delta Gamma is hosting Pink Night on October 29th at Impact Coffee and Alpha Beta Psi is holding a Stride Through Their Story 5k in May.
